Mosman Art Prize winner receives OAM
Elizabeth Cummings, The Music Room, 1996
Painter Elisabeth Cummings was honoured on Australia Day with a Medal of the Order of Australia.
Cummings has been exhibiting since 1963. In 1996 she won the Mosman Art Prize for her work The Music Room which was exhibited last year at the Mosman Art Gallery in the Prize retrospective Controversy and Acclaim.
“It’s exciting, but it was a big surprise when I heard,” Cummings told the Macarthur Chronicle. “I think it’s nice that it’s an Australian award.”
Indigenous Unsung Heroes
As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, Year 7SP students from Mosman High School collaborated to express their admiration and acknowledgement of Australia’s unsung heroes. Students constructed sculptural works, incorporating found organic materials and dry point etching, a technique they have been exploring in class.
Observing the theme Indigenous Unsung Heroes students researched, and were inspired by the stories of these individuals, choosing an image that they felt celebrated their achievements.
This collaborative work was shown in the foyer of the Mosman Art Gallery from 4 to 11 July 2010.
