Reliving the days of the Mosman artists' camps

Last Sunday people gathered at the Julian Ashton Art School at Headland Park, Georges Heights to relive the bohemian stories of the famous Mosman artists’ camps of the 1890s.

The first speaker was Paul Delprat whose great grandfather Julian Ashton camped with other artists and produced works painted outdoors at Edwards Beach, Balmoral.

Paul had many stories to tell from this time and the fantastic mural on the back wall of the school studio helped to create the ambience of the artistic scene.

The second speaker, film maker and writer Albie Thoms, literally wrote the book on the subject of the artists’ camps.

In conjunction with the 1991 exhibition Bohemians in the Bush, which was curated by his late wife Linda Slutzkin for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Albie wrote the exhibition catalogue and produced a documentary film for the ABC. Given the popular reception to this Sunday talk, the Gallery is considering screening the film at a later date. Both Albie and Paul participated in the recreation of the Edwards Beach camp in 1991 which was part of the Bohemians in the Bush exhibition.
