From September to November 2012, the Mosman Art Gallery will stage their biggest exhibition project to date: Bungaree: the First Australian, curated by renowned Aboriginal curator Djon Mundine.

You are invited to join the

Friends of the Mosman Art Gallery
as they travel north and follow in the footsteps of Bungaree of Broken Bay.

Leaving the Lower North Shore behind, the Friends will travel by coach to Ourimbah and visit the Australian Rainforest Sanctuary. This sanctuary is regarded as an artwork in itself, with the natural shapes and colours of the rainforest acting as a canvas for a wide variety of ever-changing views and vistas. The area is home to almost 200 species of rainforest flora and more than 126 species of native birds. It is considered to be the best surviving rainforest in the Newcastle to Wollongong region.

In this lush environment, you will have the opportunity to listen to local Aboriginal musicians, hear a talk about Aboriginal Bush Food and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a serving of Lemon Myrtle Slice.

You may also choose to follow one of the walking trails that offer a unique chance to experience and learn about the life cycle of an authentic Australian rainforest.
From the Rainforest Sanctuary, the Friends will travel further north to Lake Macquarie Art Gallery where you will enjoy a light lunch of assorted wraps (vegetarian and gluten free options available). Enjoy the beautiful vistas of Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake. Follow the mosaic pathways that meander through the leafy sculpture park.

There will be a guided tour of the exhibition, Stencils Past Stencils Last and an artist floor talk. This exhibition encompasses printmaking and stencil art in the form of works on paper, textiles and clothing. The exhibition pushes the boundaries of local practice and the expectations of local Indigenous visual art.
