In an age where the selfie rules, art critic and broadcaster Andrew Frost will lead a discussion with photographers Gary Grealy and Tamara Dean about the complex relationships between photographers, their subjects and the audience. The session will also include an overview of the individual approaches of each photographer to portraiture.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Greg Weight is unable to attend the forum. Another guest photographer is yet to be confirmed.

About the speakers

Andrew Frost

Andrew Frost is the art critic for the Australian edition of The Guardian. He is also a well respected lecturer and broadcaster. Since 2007 he has written and presented a number of TV programs for the ABC on contemporary art and he is the author of the 2013 monograph on the Australian film The Boys published by Currency Press.
 

Tamara Dean

Tamara Dean is a photographic and installation artist based in Australia whose works explore the informal rites of passage and rituals of young people. Dean has received numerous awards including the Olive Cotton Award and Sydney Life: Art & About and her works have been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally. Dean’s work is held in a number of public and private collections including Artbank and she is represented by Olsen Irwin Gallery Sydney. Tamara Dean has also worked extensively in the world of journalism as a photographer for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Gary Grealy

Gary Grealy is a Sydney-based commercial photographer. He has established himself over many years as an advertising and portrait photographer with work commissioned by leading advertising agencies and major national and international clients. Gary’s personal work has been exhibited at The Australian Centre of Photography and is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery. He has been a finalist in the NPPP seven times.
