Aftermath I from 1997 features several key
components of Tillers’ work from this period. Painted
on Tillers’ customary canvas boards, this work is
comprised of several smaller vignettes, brought
together into a cohesive whole, connected tonally,
and visually through the use of text. At this time
Tillers was looking back at twenty years of his
practice and drawing these disparate elements into
his work; reflecting his first work on canvas boards
Suppressed Imagery, 1981, recently shown here in
Tillers’ retrospective. It also connects to the way that
Tillers’ sees all of his paintings as being connected
into one ongoing, infinite artwork.
