Rothwell’s fascination with taking the recognisable and pushing it to a point of abstraction creates a contemplative mood, the stencilling and layering of the dark image gives a painterly affect as the towering tree form pulses in and out of focus. The overall impression is of a mysterious and transitory state, as though the tree might evaporate before our eyes without a trace.”
