Sakura and Steel was created in response to the 1942 Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour. Through choreography and movement, the work reflects on the experiences of the Japanese submariners, many of whom died during the mission and were later honoured with military funerals.
Feyen’s work also considers the relationship that developed between Australia and Japan in the decades that followed. The video reflects on a shared history and the enduring cultural, political and economic connections that have shaped relations between the two countries.
