The Cube: Mia Boe

“Step into this portal. I’m not sure where you will go. I hope it takes you where you need to be. These spirits will stay with you.”
– Mia Boe

Mia Boe is a Naarm (Melbourne)–based artist. Her work reflects on Australia’s layered narratives and shifting social and political environments. Boe’s practice explores resilience and resistance. Shaped by Indigenous knowledge practices that continue as expansive systems deeply embedded within contemporary Australian culture, resisting the impacts of settler colonial history.

Portal is a new immersive installation by Boe that invites audiences into a space that feels as though they are stepping into one of her paintings. Painting directly onto the gallery walls, the work extends across the space, while figurative sculptures are suspended from the ceiling. The installation situates the audience in a space suspended between time, history and the environment.

Recent exhibitions include And Still I Rise currently on at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Nocturnal House at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney, (2025) and Blak In-Justice: Incarceration and Resilience, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, (2025).
