This painting is a recording of the artist’s observations of Mount Yaccaba, located between Port Stephens and Hawks Nest on the north coast of NSW.
She has only viewed its towering cliffs from below on the water, observing its rugged, rocky façade accompanied by the dizzying sway of the boat. As they slowly move around the cliffs, the shadowy caves and crevices appear to be sliced by vast rocky headlands exposed to nothing but sun and salt, creating a composition shaped by tectonic and weather activity. Through the blurring of linear pictorial space and the use of large, jagged forms, she seeks to encapsulate its rugged terrain set upon choppy seas, a site that represents nature’s wildness and unpredictable beauty.
Through this process, Jablonski also deepens her connection to place and expand my understanding of the world around her through a heightened awareness of spatial, material, and colour relationships.
