“Gender affirmation can take the form of quiet, intimate, seemingly mundane processes, yet they carry a weight, significance, and sense of identity unique to each individual. The decisions and actions a trans or gender non-conforming person makes to affirm their gender look different from person to person.
I shaved my head for the first time eight years ago, when I was beginning to come to terms with my gender and come out as trans, and I have been shaving it myself ever since. The work captures the aftermath of a buzz cut: freshly shaven hair scattered across the bathroom floor, with a pair of hair clippers resting beside it. These objects create a portrait, even though I am absent from the frame.”
