“Footloose is an artwork shaped by my experience of painting en plein air during a recent residency in Provence, France.
I became increasingly aware of how colour and light in Provence appear to move freely, with little regard for stable form. This fugitive quality is intensified by the region’s particular atmospheric and geological conditions.
The work also reflects on a longer history within Western art, in which colour has often been mistrusted as a reliable descriptor of truth. The transparency of watercolour is ideally suited to describing the effects of light and colour, yet the medium remains systematically underrepresented in painting.
Footloose challenges our assumptions about the truth of human seeing and questions the hierarchies that have positioned certain materials and modes of painting as more authoritative than others.”
