“This painting was made while reading Earth Sound Earth Signal over New Year’s, during a hike to Mount Speculation in Victoria’s High Country along the Crosscut Saw ridgeline in the Alpine National Park. Oli was resting beneath a twisted snow gum, trying out our new Z-sit pads, when they heard something move. Sound shifted our attention towards the movement. It was a copperhead snake rustling through the long grass beside their head.
In this work, I take that moment and rebuild it as a memory already reworking itself, the way snow gums twist and reform their growth over time and after fire. The tree’s regrowth becomes its own future fossil, a record of material transformation embedded in land and body. Paint stands in for the frequencies present in that clearing, ground, bark, snake, breath, and our tired bodies, collapsed into a single, unstable image.”
