This painting depicts Mary’s Country, at a sacred site known as the home of the Tingarri beings. Mary was born bush way at Kurluwarri, west of this sacred site. As a child, she lived in the bush with her family, walking huge distances across the desert, sitting with the women, collecting Kampurrampa (bush berries) and Wangurnu (grain), and eating a wide variety of bush foods.
Mary’s in-depth knowledge of the sandhills, claypans, and rock holes of her Country is represented through bold lines and detailed dot work in her traditional style of painting. She steadily works her way across the canvas, repeating motifs that form part of a visual language unique to the Western Desert, allowing for the continuation of traditional forms and stories.
