Bridie Gillman’s painting practice has become a meditative act of recalling her experiences of a place through the abstraction of colour, shape, and form. While each piece is based on a specific observation, it is an emotional response rather than a representation of place.
Part of her Land Marks body of work, made in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, this painting is based on a set of stairs she came across in a densely vegetated tropical area in the city’s surrounding hills. As she got closer, she was surprised to discover that, rather than being painted orange, the stairs were covered in a vivid orange growth. Seemingly leading the artist nowhere, the staircase glowed a sight drew upon while painting this work.
