“The cobblestones were wet, and it was getting dark. It was the beginning of spring, and Antonio was carrying a blue balloon along Corso del Rinascimento in Rome. At Libreria Serendipity, I bought a book called Roma: Le Fontane, by Bruno Brizzi, published by Casa Editrice Colombo in 1972.
I made this painting in oil, working from a black-and-white photograph in its pages. The photograph depicts two caryatids from the Fountain of Acqua Vergine at the nymphaeum of Villa Giulia, designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati and Giorgio Vasari and built in 1553.
It is part of an ongoing series, often returning to the same scene.”
