Ham Darroch is a contemporary visual artist based in Canberra. Spanning more than two decades, Darroch’s practice reflects on 20th-century Modernism and 21st-century life, driven by an unwavering intellectual curiosity, a rich use of colour, and masterful technical ability.
The current series of paintings takes human proportions as its point of departure. Like many of his works, it begins by considering what it means to be human, imbuing the paintings with ideas of empathy, simplicity, and shared humanity.
This painting is about the arrival of a sound or a message and has many layers that slowly reveal themselves, from simple geometry to the sacred. The painting’s motif shifts through compositional planes of colour that are activated, interrupted, reappear, overlap, and echo, operating like groups of musical notes.
